This page will walk the user through the operation of Outpost. In general, packet is easiest with a Terminal Node Controler that is plugged into a 9 pin serial adapter on a computer. A prolific 2303 USB-Serial Adapter will work provided the correct driver is used.
1. Once the mode has been selected, Click on 'Open Session' in the red circle below:
2. If you know the Node and Frequency, enter the Node to be connected, and tune the radio to the frequency. However, if you don't know the Node information, Click on 'Channel Selection' to bring up a list of available Nodes to choose from:
3. A Session window will open. Once the desired Node has been selected, tune the radio to the selected frequency and Click on 'Start,' circled in blue.
4. IF a TNC has not been set up, then a window will open up to allow the TNC to be configured:
a. Select the type of TNC from a list.
b. Select the model.
c. Select the COM port. If a USB -to- Serial adapter is being used, ensure that there is a driver installed for that adapter. (Also ensure that the COM port for that adapter has been selected.)
d. Set the speed of the data beteen the computer and the TNC.
e. Select the speed of the data leaving the radio. VHF can usually only handle 1200 baud.
f. When complete, Click 'Update' at the bottom of the page.
5. When the TNC has been configured, Click 'Start' circled in red. If changes need to be made to the TNC, Click 'Setup' circled in blue.
6. A connection to the node will be made. The software will handle all of the commands to the TNC. All messages for this user will be downloaded from the node. Also, all messages from the user will be uploaded to the node for processing.
